How We Got Saved

How I Got Saved! Written By Alta Shakespheare

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from every sin.

(John 1:7)

Praise the Lord. Just like so many of us, I came to the Lord when I was about eight years old.  I lived in a big city, and every summer I would go down to be with my grandparents in Kentucky.  In the meantime, I had been in a Presbyterian church.  That was what I was doomed to.  But my grandfather, until I came into the church, I never met a person who loved Jesus like he did.  It created an appetite in me that was simply wonderful.  He worked in the fields, and he would come in in the middle of the day. There was a room that was cool, and he would lie down and read the Bible.  So one day he really got down to business, and he told me I needed to be saved.  I really didn't believe this so much because I tried to be good because of all my Presbyterian background, but it got into my heart that I needed Jesus.  I knew that if he had Jesus that's what I wanted.  So I accepted the Lord.   I remember from a very early age that I felt different from other people, and I know I was protected through all the years.

I went back to that Presbyterian church, and although they used to be better than they are now, it left a lot to be desired.  There wasn't anything like what we have now.  Then I went to a Catholic school, and that was just about as bad as the Presbyterian.  I thought I was going to have to die and go to heaven before I would have these things in me fulfilled and answered.  I didn't know it could be real.

When I finally touched the church, it was in Paul Onica's living room.  He had come back from a conference.  I went in that room and there were about 20 people there. I knew I was home.  My whole life has changed.  Jesus is so sweet.  Thank the Lord, that just as so many have testified, when we find the Lord has a purpose, that makes us complete because before that we were all looking for things for ourselves.
